Born in East Berlin as Hansel Schmidt, Hedwig undergoes a botched sex-change operation in order to marry an American soldier and escape to the West. Abandoned in Kansas and left with only an “angry inch,” Hedwig forms a glam rock band and sets out across the United States, telling her life story through music while pursuing the former lover who stole her songs and became a rock star.
